I think it's pretty intriguing sounding. It has the potential to be a sleeper hit like Moon, I think.

Neat, I'd like to see more independent movies like this in the genre.

FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES ACQUIRES “ANOTHER EARTH”

Specialty Arm Acquires Rights to English Speaking Territories

PARK CITY, UT January 26, 2011 – Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley announced today that the company has acquired rights to English speaking territories for the emotionally charged sci-fi drama ANOTHER EARTH. Directed by Mike Cahill and written by Cahill and Brit Marling, ANOTHER EARTH stars William Mapother, Brit Marling, Jordan Baker, Robin Lord Taylor and Flint Beverage. The film was produced by Hunter Gray of Artists Public Domain, Mike Cahill, Brit Marling and Nicholas Shumaker.

“There are haunting yet touching and beautiful elements in Brit Marling and Mike Cahill’s first feature. Brit’s performance is a revelation,” said Utley and Gilula. “We are excited to be working with such extraordinarily talented filmmakers.”

“We were stunned and provoked by this original new vision of our world,” said Claudia Lewis, Fox Searchlight’s President of Production. “This profound love story and philosophical meditation, set in a real yet future world took our breath away.”

“Fox Searchlight has proven to be the true champion of the auteur filmmaker, and I am honored to work with them and hope this is just the beginning,” said Cahill.

“Artists Public Domain strives to allow filmmakers to realize their creative vision. It has been wonderful to have Another Earth so well received at Sundance and to now be in the hands of Fox Searchlight,” said Gray.

In ANOTHER EARTH, Rhoda Williams (Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.

Hummm... interesting. Will we see the other Earth? Hopefully they don't pull the old cop out of just showing the ship going to the other Earth at the end or getting there and fading to white... but seeing how it's an independent... I say we never see it.

It sounds too much like that, and will probably invite negative comparisons to the older movie from fans of the older movie.

Considering how people have been influenced by BSG and its treatment of clothing and customs of the 12 Colonies, I'll say that it will be a cop-out ending-this is an independent film of the current day, after all.

Looks intriguing, as does Troll Hunter and Perfect Sense. The latter seems broadly similar to Melancholia which is also due this year.

Looks like it focuses more on the central character than on this other Earth, but it looks pretty interesting and I hope to check it out.

I think classifying this as sci-fi is a bit of a stretch since it looks like pretty much a character-drama. The girl could just as well be deciding to travel to Hong Kong and start a new life as travel to a duplicate Earth (which I doubt we'll see much of).

Why are people doubting we will see the other Earth? Cost the same to show the other Earth as this Earth.

Funny, cause I think classifying this as anything other than sci-fi is a massive stretch, as the plot device which drives this character drama is wholly scientific in nature. And since when are "sci-fi" and "character drama" mutually exclusive concepts?

And seeing as how this is a Star Trek site... didn't just about everyone in the story department of TOS express the notion that to be a good Trek story, a script had to be a good story even if totally stripped of it's sci-fi trappings? I'm guessing "character dramas" fall into that definition pretty well.

The title of this talkback post at AICN encapsulates all that is wrong with fans on the Internet:

IOW, "I am almost wholly ignorant but I have a right to post an opinion and will damn well do so!"

It's a pity guys like that don't choke to death on their first teething rings.

Reading AICN talkbacks always makes me feel better about myself.

If you've just discovered a duplicate Earth, who cares about your frickin' love affair?

I saw it at the L.A. Film Festival a few weeks ago. I liked it, but didn't love it. The two lead performances are great, but a few supporting players are pretty awful. Luckily, the leads rather dominate the proceedings, so it isn't a huge detriment to the movie. At times, the film's dark and grainy photography adds an immediacy to scenes that is really effective. At other times, though, it just makes it hard to see what's going on and feels cheap.

The last thing that I'm not sure I liked -- and I go back and forth on this -- is the use of Earth II in the film itself. In the end of the film, it is used as a metaphor for second chances (and this idea is repeated at various points earlier in the movie). The sf fan in me wanted to explore the idea in much greater detail (in the movie, it's on the fringes rather than the forefront of most scenes), but I can accept that that was never the filmmaker's intent. Actually, the "Another Earth" concept would be a great one for an anthology series, which could be emotional and dramatic like the film one week, and much more speculative and scientific the next.
