Announcing New Female Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

Cool idea, but shouldn’t she be named after a historical artist? ;)

Now I’m mentally picturing dozens of human baby sized turtles desperately struggling their way out of being buried in the sand.

Who would you suggest? Frida Kahlo? Georgia O'Keeffe?

Back in the 90's, Venus came out during the era of Xena: Warrior Princess. Now, they appear to be modeling Jennika (play on Annika?) on Seven of Nine (former bad guy reforms and joins the good guys).

Eighteen years after VOY has gone off the air, Seven of Nine is STILL having an impact (so much so, other franchises are trying to capture HER mojo).

I think that says something about the character. She's never been solely about T&A (as much as certain people would like to think otherwise. :shifty: )

That trope's older than Seven. Pussy Galore, Black Widow, Rogue, just to name a few.

I know you used a winky, but here's a serious answer.

No. Jennika was originally human. Her parents no doubt didn't anticipate that she would become a ninja turtle down the road. The original four male turtles were all named by Splinter at the same time.

Well now we just have inconsistent mutagen physics!

And still begs the question, would she bury her eggs in sand?

Presumably a Renaissance artist. There were more than a few female ones:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_artists#Renaissance

Of those named there, I think Marietta and Lavinia could be good Ninja Turtle names. Nicknames would be Mary and Vinnie, respectively.

Back in the 90's, Venus came out during the era of Xena: Warrior Princess.

Which was probably not an influence on the name, if that's what you're suggesting. The Next Mutation character's full name was actually Venus de Milo, so it's obvious where they got her name from.

Also, NT:TNM was from Saban Entertainment, the makers of Power Rangers, so the inspiration for adding a fifth, female member to the four-person color-coded team was probably quite close to home (although Venus did not have a pink mask).

That is a gigantic stretch. According to Wikipedia, she was mutated into a green superhero when Leonardo gave her a blood transfusion to save her life, which is the same origin story as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. If anything, that's the more likely inspiration for her name.

Why JENNIKA? Why that name in particular? That's what puzzles me.

Unlike Jennika, She-Hulk didn't start out as a villain. Jennika started out as a member of the Foot Clan (The bad guys). She reformed and became good.

There's a great deal of Seven of Nine in Jennika. Perhaps there's some overlap?

Jennifer's and Annika's names may have been combined as tributes to BOTH of them.

Be that as it may, I found the name "Jennika" most curious.

It appears to be a play on "Annika".

Jennika was originally human.

Just like Seven of Nine.

Now that Seven of Nine is going to Star Trek: Picard, she's just become recent news again.

There are plenty of names ending in those letters: https://www.kidpaw.com/search.php?q=nika&from=end

And as Kai said, there are literally thousands of fictional characters that fit that description. The trope of villainesses breaking good and joining the heroes goes back to antiquity.

Except Jennika has existed as a character for four years; the only new development now is that she's getting a spinoff title. She was introduced in the comics in October 2015, and the plans to mutate her into a turtle were developed starting in May 2017. The Picard series hadn't even been conceived then.

This post from the author who created the character suggests that he based her name in numerology.
