Andromeda: How stupid were the Nietzscheans?

The Nietzscheans don't strike me as the smartest people ever for instance.

"When you overthrow the Systems Commonwealth since you thought it was too weak to protect you against the Magog invasion's scouts, causing there to be 3 centuries of bloodshed and chaos and oops not protecting anyone from the main invasion force of Magog?"
"When you're supposedly genetically superior but keep getting your ass handed to you by a 300 year old plain jane human that is genetically inferior, or Kluge so to speak."
"Wow well your so called superior society keeps collapsing into civil war."
"When you hate kluges, but treat the carcass of one as a sacred relic."

Hunt is from a high gravity World.

He is much stronger and tougher than a baseline human.

It's when Shamus, who has both rickets and shingles, gets the drop on three of them that you begin to wonder how these fraks are superior.

Yeah........ I'm watching the series again and nearly half way into season 2 and just for laughs it's funny to think these people had 3000 years or more as a society

The supermodel Nietzchean women make no sense.

If its all about baby making, then aesthetics should be an after thought.

Child bearing hips and... What is the Nietzchean standpoint on breast feeding?

Today mothers milk is better than formula, but what about tomorrow?

Genetically engineered women are going to be expressing super steroids from their boobs... But actual steroids in a bottle are also steroids, and it's easier to latch on to a bottle.

Sigh.

I'm watching s01e06, where they go back to the battle of Witchhead, which I thought happened much later than this, since I watched the show originally in syndication and infrequently and out of order...

Trance is lying.

She's took them there on purpose.

Of course Trance is lying she has been lying since they first found her before the series even started. I read the Coda that was written for the show and had half that stuff been done on the actual show it would have been tons more awesome.

Oh and the Spirit Of The Abyss was love?????????? Hey Trance said it, at least she did in the Coda.

I said that half way through watching the episode, not expecting that they would have nailed the character so well this early on... But there she is at the end pruning her Bonsai tree that's representative of her manipulation on the shape of time.

Laura Bertram was brilliant as Trance. She nailed her character.

It was inevitable that the Nietzscheans would turn out to be that stupid and petty and power-hungry. It's literally in their DNA. They have absolutely no emotions, no concepts of loyalty, compassion, honor or self-sacrifice. Every Nietzschean cares about no one but themselves.

(Well, except for Ismael Khalid. Still trying to figure him out. A nice Nietzschean? Who woulda thunk it. )

I mean, what else would you expect from a race derived from the writings of Nietzsche himself? He was just like that. So were others of his ilk, like Ayn Rand.

It's like this scene in "The Unconquerable Man":

Tyr Anasazi: You find betraying our people - all our people - funny?

Gaheris Rhade: Our people? Our people were meant to be living gods. Warrior poets who roamed the stars bringing civilisation. Not cowards and bullies who prey on the weak and kill each other for sport. I never imagined they'd prove themselves so inferior. I didn't betray our people. They betrayed themselves. You know this better than anyone.

Why do you dislike Vulcans so much? ;)

Back when the show originally aired i watched.. very cool designs and SFX for their time but it never really took off on a grander scale it seemed and bit by bit entangled itself in its own story until i lost interest and stopped watching.

However i read some of the background material written for the show (they had a very cool site back then with tons of universe history and such, quite well done and interesting) and this kept me going for a while.

Now that i read the Coda i'm actually impressed had they stuck to their guns and been able to pull this off.. if done well it could have become a cult hit like Babylon 5 for its epic story and concept but apparently the studio didn't understand it and wanted apparently just bland space battle crap. Babylon 5 nearly fell victim to that too when they were close to shutting down the show so the Shadow War story and aftermath had to be accelerated in Season 4 but Andromeda wasn't that lucky.

I'm curious. I know you were joking but how are they like Vulcans?

That was Tribune. They kept pushing for more action and space battles. I too have read the Coda and the show would have been totally different had they followed the Coda.

Actually, I'm not joking because IF you look at "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" as a future version of the Federation (which effectively falls AT the time Dylan Hunt ' and his ship hibernate' for 300 years to return to see the results and begin to 'rebuild' said Federation). The Nietzcheans WERE effectively the Vulcans (yes, they didn't embrace logic per se; but they saw themselves as superior to everyone else (IMO a VERY Vulcan trait); and their only goal was constant physical and emotional improvement to bolster their chances of survival. ;)

OK I can see the parallels there now... Interesting.

I really would have loved a new Star Trek show set pot Nemesis or when the Federation falls over. That could be good.

In my imagination this is what Andromeda should have been.

They’re their version of Klingons. Of course they were stupid. They just messed up three galaxies with their war.

I heard it was Kevin Sorbo who wrestled control over the show from Wolfe and wanted to make it more like "Hercules" in space.

There's a number of stories of what went on. I think studio interference was a given but not sure about the story about Sorbo and his ego wanting to run the show.

It's like this scene in "The Unconquerable Man":

This is exactly right. The point of the Nietzscheans was that they believed they were superior (and other races believed them) but not that they actually were. They were the most "Star Trek" style race in the entire show. After reading the Coda and seeing what the series could have been, I really believe that this series could have been one of the best SF shows ever. It was just too far ahead of its time.

The Sorbo story was very much a part of the events at the time. I am not sure if he was actually behind the change, but he was certainly on camera defending it. It can't be hard to find interviews with him from that time.

I'm watching the opening credits... And all I'm thinking is that this is an obvious Christian metaphor for the fall of Christian dominance and it's eventual return thanks to this space Jesus here... Which is not all that likely since despite that SuperChristian Kevin Sorbo is narrating, he wouldn't yet have the leverage to pull away from Gene's vision this early.
