Will and Kyle Riker competed in a match during "The Icarus Factor" as a way of settling their differences, during TNG's second season; however, the sport was never shown again during TNG's run, nor was it played on either DS9 or Voyager.

Memory Beta suggests that it was invented by a blind man from Alpha Centauri, but I was wondering if the sport has appeared anywhere else that I'm not aware of; it seems like it could be an actual sport, as its not that different than jousting with large clubs.

In the show Kyle Riker says it's the ultimate evolution of the martial arts, I think in all of the wars and societal changes between the 20th and 24th centuries someone saw some old tapes of American Gladiators and got confused.

We never saw it again because the episode was crap, and the silly-looking "ultimate martial art" pulled its weight in making it that way

I still don't understand what that illegal move was all about that Will cried about
it's not like Kyle lifted his visor and was cheating that way

This is undoubtedly one of the reasons that this episode was so weak. They must have hated wearing those ridiculous costumes.
That & the awful writing. What 2 people who've engaged in something their entire lives talk about it like they're reading a description from a textbook?

Looks like a leg sweep to me. I can't say why it would be illegal, by maybe they are

I just thought it was funny that they tried to speak Japanese.

According to Memory Beta, the attack was illegal because it was made from behind and may have been construed as an attempt to cause an injury.
