American Horror Story: Cult

Figured I'd just start a dedicated post to this, rather than continue the anticipatory one...

I loved AHS: Hotel... Freak Show left me kind of Meh... And last season I didn't track with at all... So this season, I was caught up with the title.. I love stories about cults, real and otherwise.. But then I heard it was going to tie into the 2016 election and that had me thinking it would be more about "cult of personality".. but after watching last night.. I have NO idea what is going on and that is ok by me.

Still a little puzzled about how they let them use frequent F bombs during the early showings, but I guess things are getting lax with the cable networks.

Having watched every previous season (to me, the first two are still the best ones), I wasn't sure what to expect last night, due to the promos being quite mysterious and visiting the tour when it came to Philadelphia to promote Cult.

Watching last night, I felt it more fast-paced than previous ones, with everything going straight away and not having the building on things that previous seasons had. However, I did like how it went along.

Despite the fast pace, it did open a lot of mysteries for what we'll see, as well as seeing how things will develop. I also liked some of the references to previous seasons.

I stayed with the other seasons even though some I didn't like much, and I'm hoping this one develops into something I like.

AHS:Freakshow clown returns. So many clowns in CULT. Between AHS and the remake of Stephen King's IT. Scary clowns are back.:shifty:

Like I said in the anticipation thread, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I thought that using the election of Trump as a jumping off point for a story about fear and anxiety was an interesting idea.
The characters so far are pretty interesting, and the performances were great.
Some of it did feel a bit exaggerated, but I get the feeling that was kind of the point.
I can't find it now, but I did read an interview the other day that did discuss the cult elements of the story a bit. From the bits and pieces I've put together it sounds like Evan Peters character is going to end up becoming kind of a Jim Jones or Charles Manson type of character.
I'm curious if the bees from the credits and commercials are a literal part of the story or just a metaphor for the cult.

Edit: I hope it's OK if I just post this here so we don't end up with two threads for this.
I was wondering the same thing regarding the clowns. If not, then who drove the old ice cream truck to the murder-suicide house? Although, maybe the clowns just represent the character's subconscious fears & anxiety. Maybe, it was just a murder-suicide...probably not. The grocery store interior looked like it was set in the '70s or '80s. I thought back to my own boyhood being in a store like that.
I can't remember, did they show the ice cream truck after the moms got home?
I just remembered we did see the blood smilie face on the wall in the preview, so that might point to them being real. I was also wondering if it was just a coincidence that Winter was showing Ozzie the dark web murder video just before a real murder occured across the street. That seems like some pretty coincidental timing to me.
That was definitely a very retro grocery store.

The boy saw the ice cream truck pull up and the clowns got out.

Yeah, but I was wondering if he's developed his mother's mental illness and started hallucinating them too.

I'm pretty sure I saw the truck still there at the end, but now I can't recall for sure.. I'll have to go back and check...

Interesting choice having Paulson and Pill as a married couple, considering in real life, there's 12 years between them.. I guess in this day and age, age difference isn't that big a deal, but I wonder if that will be an issue.

I doubt it, it's not that big of a difference compared to a lot of other actors who have played a couple.

I don't know if this the one you read but it does talk about that :

Maybe i wasn't supposed to laugh but the various reactions people had to the Trump victory made me laugh. I've read many reactions from both sides in real life that made me laugh too. I didn't really like Sarah Paulson's character at first but I related to her not being able to vote Clinton though from the other side. I couldn't vote for Trump so I voted 3rd party.

Clowns don't scare me so I didn't get scared. Ghosts haunting houses does bother me. I watched a lot of Roanoke with my hands over my face.

Evan Peters is really good at playing these dangerous characters. He was the scariest thing about the premiere. I've run into some scary Trump supporters online. Billie Lourd was really creepy as Kai's sister. the conversation involving anal sex with her brother was creepy. She had this little weird unnerving smirk that creeped me out

So she was his sister, I wasn't real clear on what exactly their relationship was supposed to be.
Turns out there are a whole ton of actors we didn't see in the first episode. I'm curious to see what role all of them will be playing in the story.
Here's the supporting cast list from Wikipedia:

Here is some interesting analysis on episode one:

It's oddly meta that they shout out Lena Dunham yet the actress herself will be on the show playing someone else.

Not sure what to make of that one. I haven't watched AHS since dropping off somewhere in the first season and while the real-life election backdrop is intriguing I'm not sure how I feel about the episode itself. I think the real election and its aftermath has been surreal enough on its own and at the forefront of the news cycle for so long that it gives this a weird feeling. I guess an unsettling feeling is appropriate for this series but I'm not sure how much is coming from the series and how much just from the actual events!

The early part of the episode reminded me of the SNL sketch with Dave Chapelle at an election night party.

This week's episode left me winded.. It crammed so much into so little time, I felt.. I'm going to have to go back and watch it again.. And also stop reading so much analysis... I find myself looking for so many clues that i'm actually missing what is ACTUALLY going on. LOL...

We're going to need a yes or no, pretty soon, as to whether or not the clowns are really real, I think...

Sarah Paulson's character is really grating. She's really really annoying. I'm pretty sure that her therapist is involved in whatever is going on. She's being targeted with her fears and who better to know them than her therapist?

The insanity of this season would not surprise me if the last episode reveals the whole season was all a nightmare of Sarah Paulson's character. Maybe, it ends with her waking up from the nightmare on the morning of election day last November 8th and looking forward to going to vote. ;)
