Alt. names for Akira class?

Rÿcher

Fleet Captain
when the Akira class model kit is released sometime in '09 (rubs hands together like a madman), what are some good names for the ship other than Thunderchild and Akira?

Personally, I've always had the notion of naming an Akira class "Tetsuo" or "Kaneda". Or what would be another fictitious naval vessel of note that did something heroic against something sci-fi-ish? "Eldridge" maybe?

Ooh, imagine this!

Since there's going be Martian War Machines (1950's version) released as kits, someone should do a space battle diorama of the Thunderchild duking it out with a couple of the MWM's.

Well, the USS Eldridge WAS a real ship. It just has that fuzzy conspiracy theory around it.

Akira is a kinda strange name for a ship, since it's a first name. it's like having a ship called USS Larry. Because "Akira" probably comes from the anime movie or is named after the director Kurosawa, other names from these sources would be good. How about "Yojimbo," "Ran," or "Kagemusha," or "Akahige," or "Rashomon"?

I always thought Akira was a bit of a heavy name for the class. Needs something lighter and nippier sounding. I think Akira would have suited something Ambassador-sized or bigger.

It was named after the anime movie according to the Encyclopedia. But an "in-universe" explanation could be that it was named after someone relatively famous in Starfleet or Federation history--or perhaps it was named after some famous space battle (the Battle of Akira 028, for example)...

Other possible names: "Bushido," "Katana," "Samurai"...

Well, Thunderchild is a famous fictional ship. Maybe a ship named the Akira appeared in a piece of fiction between now and then...

By the way, according to some references I've seen, Akira means "shining one". Maybe that has something to do with it.

Hey, that gives me an idea for some alternate names- Argo, Arcadia, Macross, Emeraldas...

Akira and Thunderchild are both names taken from science fiction, so choosing other names from SF would continue the theme.

HMS Thunderchild was a ship; other ships from SF off the top of my head are Zaid-Dayan, Galactica, Tantive IV, Hibernia, Nike, and Roger Young. And Rattrap already mentioned Macross.

For Akira, I'm not sure if the ship is named after the film title, or the titular character. Maybe both. Some other eponymous characters--again, just off the top of my head--include Ensign Flandry, Honor Harrington, Flinx, and Paksennarion, although the last one is fantasy rather than SF.

Who is going to release this? What scale?

A company called Round 2. They have select rights to certain AMT, Revel, MPC and Monogram molds. It'll be in 1/1000 scale which will be a very respectable 17.3" long

How about the USS Hattori Hanzō? ;)

I really like that name actually. I have seen too many fan fiction Akira-class starships named Tetsuo and Kaneda. It's too common and so I would suggest something a little less obvious and less common. There were also the Espers Takashi, Kiyoko, and Masaru in the manga and film. There was also "The Colonel" named Shikishima. I don't know why those characters are consistently neglected in the name lists.

I think of the Akira-class as a torpedo cruiser because of its absurd number of torpedo tubes with 15 and so I have named some of my Akira-class ships for historical torpedo ships in my fan fiction.

I have U.S.S. Lightning named for the first sea-going ship armed with self-propelled torpedoes. The fictional HMS Thunder Child in The War of the Worlds is a iron clad ram based on the historical Royal Navy iron clad ram HMS Polyphemus. So I have a U.S.S. Polyphemus.

Last Unicorn Games and Decipher RPGs have Akira-class ships named for Native American tribes and Native American heroes. So I have a U.S.S. Two Moons for the Cheyenne chief who fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn and was one of three models for the Indian Head Nickel.

I believe that JT Graphics had a decal sheet for the Akira-class for ships named for the Imperial Japanese Navy: Akashi, Chikuma, Soryu, Hiryu

I like U.S.S. Eldridge for the "Philadephia Experiment". There is also the time-travelling U.S.S. Nimitz in the 1980 movie The Final Countdown.

Just for the record, Round Two doesn't have the rights to Revell or Monogram, Monogram is owned by Revell, which is owned by Tower Hobby, if I remember correctly. Round Two does, however, also have the rights to Polar Lights (appropriate, since the owner of Round Two is the original owner of Polar Lights).

Going with the Macross theme:

Name (origin)
USS Gloval (SDF-4 of teh 117th research fleet)
USS Frontier (Battle 25 city ship)

Well, lessee. There hasn't been a Yamato since TNG, so I'd say we could use that.

Musashi
Shinano
...or any other WWII Japanese vessel name.

There's also:
Shogun
Ronin
Hagakure
Saigō Takamori
Yojimbo
