Stanley Kamel, who played our favorite Starfleet propulsion "expert" in the first season episode, "Where No One Has Gone Before," dies at the age of 65. He was a character I loved to hate when I was a kid. Though I never watched the Monk, I'm sure he'll be missed by fans of the show.

Stanley Kamel's face was as familiar as his credit list was long. The ever-employed character actor, late of Monk, where he played the skittish detective's patient psychiatrist, was found dead of a heart attack Tuesday at his Hollywood Hills home, his reps said.

He was 65.

Just last week, Kamel appeared in Los Angeles at a promotional event for USA, Monk's network home. Kamel's Dr. Charles Kroger was a recurring character on the hit cable series.

In a statement, the network said it was "deeply saddened" by his passing.

"Stanley was an amazingly talented and extremely kind man, and an important member of the USA family," the network said. "He will be sorely missed."

Born Jan. 1, 1943, in New Jersey, Kamel was a veteran of the New York stage. He began working in TV in the 1970s, and virtually never stopped. It would almost be easier to list the shows he wasn't on. His résumé included stops at Mission: Impossible; Charlie's Angels; Three's Company; the original Knight Rider; Hill Street Blues; Star Trek: The Next Generation; Cagney & Lacey; Murder, She Wrote; The Golden Girls; ER; The Nanny; 7th Heaven; NYPD Blue and The West Wing.

His most memorable stints included a starring run in the 1970s on daytime soap Days of Our Lives; a turn as mobster Tony Marchette, Dylan McKay's very, very bad father-in-law, on Beverly Hills 90210; and a role as a lawyer with AIDS on L.A. Law.

In a video interview for USA's website, Kamel said the latter was among his favorite roles.

"It was an extraordinary—I don't want to say job—opportunity because as an actor. Of course, I got to go to some very deep places that actors don't always get to go," Kamel said. "But I also think it was very important because no one had seen at that time a character have AIDS."

Yeah, there's a thread about this in Gen TV, too. His death really saddens me. It was only yesterday that I saw "Where No Man Has Gone Before". I think he did a great job with that role.

But I'm mostly familiar with his role from "Monk". Dr. Kroger is really on of the most likable characters on that show. I always considered him one of the greats.

Rest in peace, Stanley Kamel. I will miss you. :(

TNG actor Stanley Kamel R.I.P.

Stanley Kamel who played Kosinski in 'Where No One Has GOne Before' has died at age 65.
He recently has been featured in 'Monk'

He was pretty prolific & it's sad to see TNG actors starting to fall off as we witnessed for the TOS actors. 20 years really is a long time and it flew by.

R.I.P.

That's so sad. I enjoyed his ongoing role on Monk.

Funny how his "Kosinski" role sent up all that technobabble years before it got out of hand.

Hey, I'm glad this guy got enough attention for two of you to start threads.
Some of these guys pass with hardly a notice.

R.I.P.

"Where No One Has Gone Before" was one of the finest episodes of the whole series. A lot of credit goes to Mr. Kamel. He made Kosinski both an officious prick and sympathetic at the same time. He will live on through his work.

^^^ It's my favorite TNG episode, right ahead of "AGT" and "Remember me"

I wish this had been one of the later season TNG episodes, as the characterization would have been a little better, but for a rockin' Sci-Fi story, you can't beat this episode.
