A random Harry Potter question: Regulus Black

RoJoHen

Awesome
Admiral
NOTE: I HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS AND HAVE MANAGED TO REMAIN COMPLETELY SPOILER-FREE THUS FAR. DO NOT SPOIL THE FINAL MOVIE FOR ME, LEST IT COST YOU YOUR SOUL.

Okay, with that out of the way...

At the end of Movie 6, we open the Locket and find out that it's not a real horcrux. Somebody named RAB stole the real locket and replaced it with the fake. We then find out in the beginning of Movie 7 that RAB is Regulus Black.

My questions are these:

1) How did Regulus know about the horcruxes?
2) Why did he feel the need to steal the real Locket, and how was he able to do so?
3) What was the point of replacing the real Locket with a fake one?

I have had absolutely no problem understanding any of the movies, but this one plot point just doesn't make sense to me, and I feel like it's something unlikely to be explained in the final film.

I don't think we can explain it without risking eternal damnation.

A much better question is why haven't you read the books?

They are freaking awesome! :bolian:

I read the first half of the first one when I was in junior high and thought it was awful. I decided not to finish it and subsequently decided not to continue with the series.

And at this point, my list of books that I want to read is so large that I probably wouldn't be able to attempt to read it again for another 10 years.

So you think this will be answered in the final film?

Regulus (Sirius' Brother, Tonks' Uncle, Bellatrix Cissy Malfoy's cousin) worked for Voldemort, and hated it and wanted out and had a price on his head for it. I don't remember why he knew about the Horcruxes, but, he had Kreacher drink the poison water from the fountain, and hid the real locket at Grimauld Place (Regulus tried to destroy it, but, couldn't), he was of course killed, but, he had put one over on the Dark Lord, who didn't even know that Horcrux had been stolen. The kids actually found it while cleaning Grimauld Place in Bk 5 Order of The Phoenix, and knew no better, and put it the to be tossed pile, but, Kreacher grabbed up Master Regulus' locket

Voldemort asked for a Death Eater to volunteer a house elf for a special task, not saying what it was. Regulus, at that time being loyal, offered Kreacher. Voldemort took Kreecher into the cave and made him drink the potion in the bowl while he hid the locket in it. Then Voldemort left Kreacher in the cave to die. However, Voldemort underestimated Kreecher's magic, and was able to return to Regulus, where he told his master what had transpired. Regulus, being quite close to and fond of Kreecher was enraged at seeing his friend treated as such and asked Kreecher to take him where Voldemort had taken him so that he could steal the Horcrux. Once in the cave, Regulus made Kreacher force him to drink the potion and had Kreacher take the real locket and replace it with a fake (possibly so as not to disrupt any traps that would be set for the locket's absence.) Regulus was dragged below by the inferi and Kreacher escaped with the real locket where it remained in 12 Grimmauld Place until stolen by Mundungus Fletcher.

That sounds pretty dumb.

That sounds pretty dumb.
Why do you say that?

Dumb? How is that dumb? It's another example of Voldemort's arrogance being his undoing. He underestimated the power of a creature he thought inferior, and also underestimated the bond (it is said many times through the series that Voldemort does not understand love) between said creature and his master. If you found out that someone you considered a dear friend was wronged so by the person whom you follow, it would change your outlook as well.
