A question on Klingon names

Would the names of Kor, son of Rynar (our favorite Klingon from "Errand of Mercy") and Khor, son of Lantar (first mentioned in S.C.E. #14 Caveat Emptor and first appeared in S.C.E. #28 Breakdowns) be spelled the same way in Klingon, and identically transliterated into the Latin alphabet as Qor?
 
I think the convention, insofar as one exists, is that q (the voiceless uvular stop, as opposed to the more fricative Q) is used for "K." "Kh" would probably be rendered as H. So they'd be qor and Hor.
 
Christopher is correct. Kor would be qor, Khor would be Hor. If there was someone named Kror, that would be Qor.

Oops, I just realized that I've been looking at Klingon transliteration for years and never noticed that "q" and "Q" were distinct in transliteration.

Then does that mean that Kang the TOS Klingon and the Qang class/Chancellor class are different? And gagh/qagh the serpent worm and Qagh the Albino too? I wasn't sure if the "Q" in those terms were meant to be capitalized or not.
 
The lower-case q is basically like a "k" but with the tongue touching the back of the throat (or rather, the uvula) rather that the palate. The upper-case Q is a harsher, more aspirated version of same, similar to the H (as in German ach or Scottish loch) but, again, more guttural, in the back of the throat. Roughly put, the q is more of a cough and the Q more of a gargle. Mark Okrand basically borrowed the sounds from Arabic when he was putting the Klingon language together.
 
Yeah, the English transliteration of the tlhIngan Hol word Qang would be "Krang," not "Kang."

One of the reasons for Q, q, H, and tlh is that it gives an explanation for why there are so many K words in the language, as what English sees as a single letter, the Klingon language has four distinct letters for. :)
 
Yep. Wondering if anyone's cobbled together a "tlh" ligature for Anglophones' usage in such situations yet.

Kor's name actually has a canonical transliteration*, uses in both The Klingon Dictionary and Klingon for the Galactic Traveler. It is: qor

The words Qagh and Qang can also be found in these books, with the meanings "mistake" and "chancellor", respectively.

Some examples of the difference that a miscapitalized Q can make:

HIvoq! = "Trust me!"
HIvoQ! = "Choke me!"

Qang DaqIHpu''a'? = "Have you met the chancellor?"
Qang DaQIHpu''a'? = "Have you destroyed the chancellor?"

pe'vIl tIqwIj joqmoH qablIj. = "Your face makes my heart beat forcefully."
pe'vIl tIqwIj joqmoH QablIj. = "Your theragen makes my heart beat forcefully."

*Canonical, in this case, means "created or approved by Marc Okrand, the creator of the language".

Right -- the Qang class ships in the novels are actually the Chancellor class in English, named for past chancellors like Gorkon.

I would submit that in Klingon, these could potentially be synonymous.
 
I just noticed that Memory Beta says that Kang is the son of "K'naiah". How would "K'naiah" be spelled in transliterated Klingon?

Hard to say without knowing how it's pronounced, but I'd probably go with qe'nay'a' or qen'ay'a'.
