a new submarine-based war or sci-fi TV series

I have decided to put this in Sci-Fi or Fantasy since it is not war-sub-genre specifically.
We haven't really had any submarine genre TV series since SeaQuest DSV (1993 TV Series) which was a sci-fi series and was very much compared to TNG. See this thread: 'SeaQuest DSV' the underwater competitor to TNG

I've also made another thread Would a reboot for 'Seaquest DSV' work in 2012/13? considering rebooting it or something similar.
Now I'd like to discuss a submarine war-genre TV series or possible sci-fi/fantasy submarine-based TV series.

As far as the war sub-genre wikipedia mentions:
Submarine films are a subgenre of war film in which the majority of the plot revolves around a submarine below the ocean's surface. Films of this subgenre typically focus on a small but determined crew of submariners battling against enemy submarines or submarine-hunter ships, or against other problems ranging from disputes amongst the crew, threats of mutiny, life-threatening mechanical breakdowns or the daily difficulties of living on a submarine
Which pretty much defines the use of TOS Enterprise in the episode #109 Balance of Terror.
There have been a few such as the 1964-68 TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea which was a sci-fi adventure series.
and Operation Petticoat (1977–1979) which was a comedy set on a submarine during WWII.
I think the feature films like U-571 (2000), The Hunt for Red October (1990),K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), and the great Das Boot (1981) and work fine as action-thrillers but not as TV series unless you had drills every episode which wouldn't be very real. WWII and the Cold War era are also very much in the past. We haven't had a modern-day nuclear submarine TV series yet.

First would there be a channel that would be interested in a modern-day nuclear submarine-based TV series? The History Channel with an original scripted drama series?
With even modern-day submarine crew not having any female crewpeople in modern nuclear submarine stories like a Western genre feature film? Hollywood and limited audiences. Now everything has to have some women in the cast. Even The Thing (1982) had no women but the prequel last year had women.

The last submarine-based movie I can remember is the awful The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). I'd like to discuss a submarine war-genre TV series.

The Japanese have a few manga anime animated series such as
Submarine 707R (1963-1965) and the recently done 13-episode anime TV series Tide-Line Blue (2008) which I think could be developed for a USA created live-action TV series. Here is the premise:
Background

Tide-Line Blue is set after an environmental disaster later called the "Hammer of Eden" has submerged 90% of the Earth under water and taken six billion lives. The series begins fourteen years after that event with the new and remaining countries being brought together under the New United Nations. However, Gould, a renegade submarine captain wishes to use military force to create peace in the new world order, while Aoi, the secretary-general of the New UN, wishes to use diplomacy.
It sounds like some of the Seaquest DSV topics.

This series is known for being relatively realistic in its use of technology and the technical accuracy of its animation.
and for those in the USA with Comcast as a cable provider free:
Tide-Line Blue is currently available free to Comcast cable subscribers with On Demand. It can be found under the Anime Selects portion of The Cutting Edge page.
What do you guys think of a submarine-based TV series within the war genre and as a sci-fi genre possibly set in the future or even in a submarine set on an alien planet's liquid ocean?
A submarine and a spaceship are very similar and the two genres mix in SeaQuest DSV but there are many obvious ones in ST:Enterprise.

The Last Resort is a sort of submarine/war/sci fi series, although it's probably more land-based than underwater. Most likely we will be seeing that next fall.

Basing all the action in a submarine seems very limiting. That wouldn't interest me.

I dunno, combining sub based action with some ground based stuff through deploying SEALs or something like that might work, but unless you get a good writing crew and have a pretty compelling premise and a good idea of season plot arcs that could be used, a sub based show seems a lot more constraining than other types of scifi shows.

Really, the best bet for submarine fiction show would probably be a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea type deal set on another planet, since it wouldn't be as constrained by real science as a similar show set on Earth would be.

I highly doubt The Last Resort will be science fiction. It's not a genre that creator Shawn Ryan has worked in, and the last time he worked in a genre other than drama was Angel back in 2001.

Sub-Based TV shows, don't exactly have a stellar history. Only two spring to mind.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Seaquest DSV/2032

It's been a while since I've seen any 'Voyage' but from memory the later season went more towards the monster of the week format.

Seaquest had to reimagine itself for it's 3rd season.

^Operation:Petticoat, the tv series.

Came into this thread hoping we were gonna vote on whether to have a submarine based war or a sci-fi tv series. Am disappointed now.

'Last Resort' will probably be reminiscent of 'Jericho'.

Submarine movies can be good; heck, I even liked Crimson Tide.

But I just can't see a series based on a submarine that wouldn't either be: too realistic to make compelling drama (this week on Boomer, the crew sits on the bottom of the ocean practicing launching a nuclear holocaust) or too unrealistic as to become Star Trek under Water.

It's alt-future if there's some kind of nuclear crisis going on - like Jericho. I count that as sci fi.

USS Kentucky: Submarine of Mass Destruction

after watching this 2 minute documentary video on a modern nuclear sub
we need a new movie at least set in modern day on a sub like this during a crisis and possible use of the weapons on board in the film.
I agree that a TV series of the war subgenre "submarine war TV series" is limiting and scifi is the way to go for a TV series on a submarine.
