2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar - Thread

Two weeks to go until the next FIFA World Cup sees its Kick-Off.

Aside from all the controversies (like human rights, suspended season schedules in the respective football leagues around the word, giving the World Cup to Qatar in the first place, the money involved etc.):

1. Anyone interested in sports that'll take place there?
2. Who's the favorite this year?

I'd say Brazil or France.

No hope for Germany - they will perform like the singers in the Eurovision Song Contest.....:D.

No big watch parties are planned - nor would I ever attend one of those.

Thoughts?

This is going to be big in Canada. Not only did we make the World Cup for the first time in 35 years, but there is a fighters chance we can get out of the group stage.

Yup, big footy fan. I’ll be watching (but in no way happy about the obvious controversy, although that’s a whole other story).

I think either France or Brazil will win. Both with lots of young and mature talent. Argentina have a great chance too.

yeah I can’t see Germany making it into top 8. Ageing squad and youth talent not quite there.

England might have a good shot. I’m not a Brit but I’ve lived in England a long time. I think we have a good chance, although a few injuries (James, Chillwell , Stones etc) means could be a weaker squad than we had during the Euros. My boy Ben White might just get a start lol.

Normally World Cup Fever grips England no one really cares due to a combination of Wintertime, being in the middle of the season and QATAR being the most unsavoury choice to host in World Cup history. I love international football and I love World Cup, but FIFA have really ruined this one by choosing Qatar.

As for the football, I think Brazil or Argentina are the most likely winners and I think they can meet at either the Semi Final or Final depending on Group results. Gut feeling is Argentina to win.

Spain is probably the best shout for European teams with Germany, England & France in a poor run of form. Portugal & Netherlands don't have the defensive strength IMO. Belgium has an ageing team + Lukaku is an injury doubt.

England might have a chance for a change - I like Southgate - the one who once missed a penalty against Germany. I was surprised to see him back as a coach, but why not?

I'm not a fan of Neymar's antics or the focus on Messi.

Big question: is Luis Suárez going to bite anyone? With Cavani's ankle injury, there will be time for Darwin Núñez to shine.

I'm looking forward to seeing the team with the biggest surprise factor emerging out of this tournament.

Alas, they already tried to recruit fans for promoting the WC as best love-peace-and-harmony-event ever. Unpopular opinions will be removed.

Some of the teams like Denmark keep the WAGs at home. Qatar is not exactly a party country. On the other hand, we won't see masses of drunk people.....

Well, I would take that as a plus but...I usually am cheering for Germany and that's not happening. So, unfortunately, the interest in the Cup is not there for me this year.

I get super into Football once every four years, looking forward to it.

I'm a little concerned about what time of day in the US the games will be played. And whether they will be recorded on US TV, in which case it will be impossible to avoid spoilers.

My beloved Italy did not make it for this World Cup. :wah: and hence i am supporting my second favourite team, the Netherlands.

I hope they go far in this tournament.

I have a sneaky feeling that Argentina might win the World Cup. France and England also look good as well.

The climate in Qatar even during the so called winter season is still warmer and dryer than many temperate countries. Therefore, I think that S. American, African and some Asian countries have an advantage in this world cup.

France have too many injuries to important players and too much drama in the dressing room. I don't see them repeating.

I think this is Brazil's tournament to lose.

If Brazil wns this World Cup, with or without Neymar's rolling antics, it would be their sixth win.

The Brazilians kept the Jules Rimet Trophy after their third World Cup win. Will they be keeping the current World Cup Trophy after the sixth win, who knows?

Aside from that?

There is nothing.

No one who genuinely cares about the sport can enjoy this event. It's a fucking bummer.

I'm enjoying Argentina getting knocked out. Messi's sons want him to win the cup. I don't.

No chance for Cristiano Ronaldo either.

Both are great individual players - but I don't see them winning. I have to confess - Argentina is always a candidate for the final. We will see.....

A Qatari player who scores a goal will be millionaire in no time.....

I've never been as unenthusiastic about / uninterested in a world cup as this one.

Russia as host was bad enough, but remarkably enough Qatar is even worse and it's diminished my interest in the event to the point I actually hoped Australia wouldn't qualify. Somehow we did, but we don't have a prayer of getting out of our group (France, Denmark, Tunisia...yeah, right) with our current lineup so we're just making up the numbers (even more so than usual).

Stoked that the team has spoken out about the...err...merits of Qatar hosting the event but that will be the highlight of our involvement.

For all that I'd like to see Argentina win the thing so the Messi naysayers will - maybe - finally shut the hell up about him. Otherwise...eh.

I'll still enjoy England getting knocked out
Watching my beloved Italy defeat England at the Euro Final is one of my favorite moments in World Football in recent years. I never liked England or Germany for that matter but England does look good for this tournament despite the fact that Reece James not being in this World Cup team due to injury. They are among the favorites for sure.

Canada has a good team. They did well in qualifying matches. Hopefully they get past the first rounds.

Last winner's curse so this one is not for us.
I will be happy with any winner except England, Germany and Belgium ;)
