A little late, but this is the minnow slaughter phase, so you haven't missed much. ;)

It's an interesting tournament. It's the last one to feature the minnows, who can provide the occasional shock as well as giving opponents plenty of personal bests, it's the first since the full rise of T20 cricket and has the very strong prospect of seeing the end of Australia's dominance.

Hosts: India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (Pakistan were due to share hosting, but were stripped following security concerns)

Groups: (in order of qualifying ranking)

Group A

Not missing much.

Listless batting. No sense of urgency against the spinners.

Two of the worst umpiring decisions I've ever seen (luckily both overturned).

If the Zimbots openers get through the initial Tait onslaught, we could be under some pressure here.

I couldn't watch the match, since Nine has a ridiculously delayed telecast. Apparently it's going to be like this through the whole WC, not just the opening round. ABC weren't covering it either. :(

Rather unimpressive performance from Australia. Zimbabwe aren't the worst side, and they've pulled back a couple of players who had walked out on them, but we looked really sluggish with the bat.

Heard about one of them I assume which involved Ricky Ponting, as saw someone on twitter (not Ricky) saying it was a bad decision.

Yet to see any highlights (and unlikely tonight), but it seems Johnson bowled well, with getting 4 wickets.

Considering how badly England, one of the favourites for the tournament, struggled against the Dutch, I don't think our effort was so bad...

England were dreadful, continuing their horrid form from the ODI series in Australia.

Apart from watching England nearly get rolled, this first week has been hard going.

Surely the minnows could have played off against each other for a wildcard spot or something?

I think we've been saying that though for about four World Cups.

Pakistan playing Kenya tonight.

You're a braver man that I if you plan to bet on this one

Well, they did play against each other for these spots; perhaps the issue is that there are too many of them. IIRC Afghanistan would be on track to make the next WC if they had associate nations...

Kenya were slaughtered again, though they at least made three figures.

South Africa v West Indies today.

I like the Saffers for this cup. Notorious big game chokers, but if I had to put money on someone, I'd go with them.

Smith has kindly decided to bowl first, so we get to see Steyn and Gayle go at it in prime time. Cheers, Smithy :techman:

Gayle needs a hundred for the Windies to be any chance. Particularly looking forward to seeing what South Africa's leggie Imran Tahir has got, having heard so much about his talent.

Well, you got one of your wishes; Gayle went quickly, but Tahir took four wickets.

Pretty dominant effort from South Africa. Darren Bravo looked terrific, but aside from that, the Saffers were on top.

Tahir is going to be a handful. Very Mustaq Ahmed/Abdul Qadir like, and very accurate. He'll come back to earth when they learn to pick his wrongun, but for now, he looks like the shock weapon that could give RSA the edge in big games.

NZ's hearts don't look at all in this game against us. Can't blame the poor bastards either.

It must be horribly difficult for them. :( I imagine they'd much rather be at home.

Having said that, they're Kiwis, and they always lift against us. They'll certainly have a go.

I'm glad that their tail did wag against us. Showed some fighting spirit for them.

Currently Australia are cruising.

Poor Vettori. Not enough that he has to lead the side and hold together their batting - now he has to open the bowling!

An out and out champion who has carried that side on his shoulders for a decade.

I wish he played for us. It wouldn't surprise me if his best days were still ahead of him, particularly now he is giving up the captaincy and ODI cricket.

Making him captain was silly. Never works for all rounders in the modern era - there are too many off field commitments these days to expect someone to be the team frontman, captain, bat and bowl. Eg : Flintoff 2006.

Anyway, tonight's game looks like the first contest of the cup at last. Sangakkara will have to bat well to get SL home tonight. Misbah's 80 odd has put the Paki's into a good position here.

Some nice tight games at last, with Pakistan just holding off Sri Lanka, and England having a tie with India.

Absolutely spectacular game last night, with Tendulkar opening up with 120 (including five sixes) and Strauss answering with 158.

Well, we have our first big upset of the tournament - Ireland defeating England thanks to a stunning innings from O'Brien.

England went in as one of the favourites, but after struggling against Netherlands and losing to Ireland, they are in a fair bit of trouble. Their tie against India was epic, but their bowling is very questionable.

Absolutely brilliant stuff from Ireland. :bolian:

The so-called minnows are worth keeping around if only for stunning results like this. Sure, they get flogged more often than not but cricket's a funny old game; anything can happen on a given day (match fixing aside, of course), and this result proves it yet again.
