"Legendary professional wrestler “Macho Man” Randy Savage died today due to injuries sustained in a car accident in Tampa, Florida.

Often regarded as one of the greatest pro-wrestlers ever, the 58-year-old Savage (real name: Randall Poffo) was reportedly driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler at around 10 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed a concrete median, careened through oncoming traffic and hit a tree head-on. Randy was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. His wife, Lynn – who Savage married just one year ago – was a passenger in the car, but sustained only minor injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts.

Randy’s brother, former pro-wrestler Lanny Poffo, told TMZ that his brother suffered a heart attack behind the wheel, causing the deadly crash. No official cause has been given and an investigation is under way."

Oh, god, his poor wife. I can't imagine having to be in the car when it happened. :(

I was never a wrestling fan, but he was one of those guys who became enough of a pop cultural icon to be well known outside wrestling circles too.

RIP

Snap into a Slim Jim oh yeaaaahhhh!!! The Macho King has gone to the squared circle in the sky.

RIP, Randy Savage. :( There have been so many wrestlers who had died before their time over the years but this one is a hard one. Savage was one of the best wrestlers and interviews in the business and a guy who legitimately drew a lot of money. I got to see him wrestle twice in person. I'm sorry him and the WWE never made amends. He will be missed.

I think about half the wrestlers who appeared at WMVII are now dead. Seriously, entire matches are wiped out. It's just too damn bad.

For a lot of male wrestling fans their Brian's Song moment(when it is okay for a man to cry) was the reconciliation angle they did with Miss Elizabeth where Randy got down on one knee and proposed to her. There were a lot of genuine tears in the building that night. RIP, Spider.

Macho Man was one of the small handful of "professional wrestlers" worth remembering, knowing, and following. He also has the "benefit" of coming from a time when I grew up, a bit, watching the -then- WWF and being one of the "greats" up there with Hulk Hogan.

Macho Man, RIP

Damn, a major character from my childhood is gone.

My sister, neighbor and I loved the WWF when we were kids, and we'd reinact matches in front of our house. I was always Andre the Giant, my neighbor was Hulk Hogan, and my sister was Macho Man Randy Savage. We were so devastated when Andre the Giant died.

RIP Macho Man. You were an icon.

Indeed. My wife and I were wrestling fans back in Savage's day, and we were lucky enough to see him live on numerous occasions, including Wrestlemania III and the inaugural Survivor Series in 1987. Randy was a consumate performer in the ring and incredibly funny behind the mike.

He will greatly be missed.
