My son and I went to the comic book store on saturday. They sell 'used' comics in a special area where you can by 12/comic books for 10$. So he and I will scour the boxes for bronze age comics; mine, and now his, favorites. We came across World's Finest #259. And sure enough, on the very first page, is the TMP movie ad. You know the one; the ENTERPRISE at an angle with head shots of the stars across the bottom with the "Coming this christmans to a theatre near you" tag on the bottom. I haven't seen one of these ads in years. But I definately remember seeing it all those years ago, and the goosebumps I got when I saw it that first time. Does anyone know if that image of the Enterprise is a painting/drawing? Or is a 'live' shot of the model that was going to be used for Phase II? Anyway, great memory! Of course my six year old son could have care-a-less. Oh well...it was fun while it lasted.. Rob
A few years back, folks here determined it was John Berkey's rendering of the E, apparently derived in large part from p2 concepts. Since the Abel-era E was even more smooth-skinned than it wound up in TMP (Trumbull's people added a lot more surface detail, at least according to Magicam, the company that did most of the work before handing it over), the Berkey rendering, which has lotsa detail, is definitely not what was actually intended for the film. I never knew it was Berkey, and I was kicking myself for not recognizing his work.
I love that image of the 'almost' E from the TMP ads too. Here is a weird bit of trivia, That poster hung on the wall of Webster's bedroom, from the sitcom with Emmanuel Lewis.
I wonder what ever happened to the 'shooting' model from the failed phase II. To bad it never made it into one of the later (TNG-DS9) shows... Rob
Pretty sure this is the image in question: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516GBCkhR9L._SL500_AA280_.jpg
That's the one I remember. I have the same experience as the OP. I've looked through beaten-up old comics and enjoyed finding that Trek ad.
^Oh yeah I have that one too, the Enterprise flying over some rocks if I recall. One side in 3D the other regular. I still have the Trek 3D cardboard glasses with it!
Sure thing, here you can see the front (non-3D) http://cgi.ebay.com/STAR-TREK-STTMP...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4cec533e71 And the back, in 3D http://cgi.ebay.com/ORIGINAL-STAR-T...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item335340ab3c
Heh, I still have that poster as well as the original issue Enterprise cutaway by David Kimble (poor thing is so beat up after 30 years... I really need to frame it).
I know how you feel. I still have my original "The Voyage Home" VHS tape that came out before TNG had started airing and it has this rather long promo for TNG on it. I still get excited watching it.
God I so remember that...I wish I still had that tape but lost it years..no..decades ago!! LOL...is that preview up on YOUTUBE yet? Rob
That model was re worked and changed to the refit config. A real shame since that model is was a piece of history, now it just looks like a bad, inaccurate version of the refit model.. http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=18643
Sorry - hate for an internet myth to get started. I own the model referenced above. That is a COPY of the Phase II, made by Brick Price's shop, and then reworked to look like the TMP-E. It is absolutely not the original....and I would not have reworked the original. Other copies are visible in a few of the Planet Hollywoods... such as NYC... for your viewing pleasure.
Bless you Search4. I was horrified to see that "restoration" E in the drydock. The drydock looked great but Miarecki really needs to stay away from the E models. I've only seen a few photos of the PII E, mainly on Andy Probert's great site. Are you able to share any photos of your original and the story of how you obtained it, and maybe clear up some of the conjecture as to its size? And what exactly was Brick Price's involvement in the PII E? Did he build the original and the copies? When and why were the copies originally made? I've seen photos of at least one of the copies and wasn't really impressed; the nacelles in particular seem to have a severe sag problem. I for one would greatly appreciate your input.
