How can one romulan mining ship destroy the federation armada?

Seriously, can someone attempt to explain this one to me? I am having a really hard time with this one. Was there anything *in the film* to explain this? I know what they said in Countdown, but it is a big stretch...

No, nothing in the film. Just Countdown's idiotic explanation of Narada being infused with Borg tech.

    *Sigh* Again with the Borg.

It wasn't an armada. It was a relatively small task force of ships, some just commisioned and some probably under going refits/training ships.

Still you would not think a mining ship would be that heavily armed. Even a mining ship from the future.

    (1) The Feds weren't expecting a battle. They were responding to a natural disaster. No one was a battle stations, shields were down, etc.

    (2) The Narada is a mining vessel that is so large it could be for large-scale mining, like blasting open asteroids to extract the metal dust (hence the long "collector" arms). The Narada never fired phasers, so it probably its armed with them. The torpedoes we saw, which divided into a spread, are probably late 24th-century Romulan asteroid-mining heavy ordinance. If you can blast an asteroid to dust, you can do the same to a puny starship too.

Its more than a mining ship, its been out fitted with the best of 24th century Romulan technology.

Don't try rationalizing the weapons as some sort of mining devices. They are also meant to be Borg influenced weapons. Trust me, if you take Countdown into consideration, Narada is basically a Borg ship, octopus-shaped for some reason as opposed to shaped like a cube or a sphere.

I could be wrong, but I guess the Narada being from 200 years in the fictional future and it all being a movie are primarily the reasons for its superior strength. But don't quote me on that.

    This is the answer.

On the Enterprise, after the first volley of missiles, Sulu turns to Pike and exclaims, "the weapons are powerful, we can't take another hit like that!"

Earlier, on the Kelvin, someone (it sounds like George Kirk) shouts -- "Are our shields even up?"

Countdown is silly, fanboy-ish, not canon, and not referenced at all by the film, even contradicted by the film. The film stands out its own without the comic book. There's nothing terribly "Borg" about the Narada, anyway.

Nero says his ship is a mining vessel, not a Borg-enhanced uber-weapon.

So I will disregard Countdown as I please, thank you.

That's my take. Imagine if one side had a bulldozer at the battle of Gettysberg assuming a sharpshooter doesn't hit the driver that earth moving equipment will smash entire companies of troops.

cue dramatic music... It's from the future!

Go back in time with an AK-47 to Waterloo, and you could wipe out both the French and the Seventh Coalition...

Oh FFS, does this question really need to be asked, again?

A ship from 200 years into the future destroyed half a dozen ships. It seriously isn't that difficult to believe.

What Kpnuts said summed up what I was going to say. How do you expect a Federation taskforce that are unprepared to square up to a ship that is 200 years in the future? Not to mention the ship dwarfs the Enterprise (and that is apparently bigger than the Enterprise-E). Also they knew the ships were incoming, as they knew before the Enterprise had exited warp, so they just fired a spread in to ships that had no shields.

There were a lot of green lights and green computer screens and terminals, both of which are Borg trademarks.

Indeed, I told a guy I know about Countdown's Borg thing and all he said was "a stupid explanation, but it does explain much."

um. Romulans have a green fetish too. The borg don't have a monopoly on green colored lights.

Outfit a modern day fishing boat with a bazooka and two dozen rounds and you can singlehandedly win the Battle of Trafalgar. You could probably sink an American Civil War-era submarine, too. I don't see where the confusion is with the 24th Century Narada and the 22nd Century fleet.

Why does everyone keep saying Narada is from 200 years in the future anyway? 24th century is 100 years after the 23rd. Spock even says he and Nero are from 139 years into the future. 139 is more logically rounded off to 100 or maybe 150, not 200. So what gives?

The missiles could have been from 50 years in the future, or 100, or 139, or 500, for the story effects they were having. 200 is a nice number of appeasement.

Oh, and Enterprise is still fresh in my head thanks to the sci-fi channel.
