Should they bring back Janeway?

This probably comes up all the time, but there hasn't been a thread (or poll) about it in ages, and the novel universe has changed a lot since Before Dishonor.

Should they bring back Admiral Janeway?

IMO they should. I wasn't her biggest fan but I feel her (non-)death was rubbish and the TrekLit universe is a less colourful place without her.

Bring her back, kill her again. Better: do a Myriad Universes with just a bunch of Janeway deaths. Print it in hardcover and rake in the cash!

If she died well I'd probably leave well alone. Problem: she didn't really even die. She became a freakin' Q.

Just to clarify, I have no horse in this race, which is why I didn't cast a vote. If it's decided to bring her back, then so be it. Otherwise....well, the world keeps on spinning.

No, she didn't. Rather, Lady Q escorted her to whatever form of existence came next for her preserved consciousness. Just being in the company of a Q didn't make her a Q.

 

i do like he idea of Janeway becoming the Kenny of Trek, but i'd rather she stayed dead.

Why should they bring her back? As Full Circle and Unworthy have shown Voyager can live without her.

I think Janeway's death opened interesting story avenues fro her (former) crew, as seen in Kirsten Beyer's best trek story for 2009 (IMO) - Full Circle / Unworthy

 

That's not the way I read it. I see a Stargate SG1 Daniel Jackson-style ascension-at-moment-of-death cop-out ending, leaving the door blatantly open for a return because someone was afraid to kill her decisively.

She's such a compelling character that it's a given that she'll be brought back. I'm kidding, of course.

 

It would be a refreshing change to have no resurrection of the Katheryn Janeway character. It seems that every major Star Trek character who has died has been resurrected some how in movie, novel, or comic book form. It seems that whenever I see a death scene in Star Trek I am looking for the plot loophole that will allow them to bring back the character. Death scenes have lost their emotional impact and I get annoyed that I have to go through the other character's grieving process only to have the character be resurrected later. So shame on you if you intend to bring the character back.

 

Doesn't count. I'm not talking about bringing her back in any old random novel, but as part of the post-Destiny timeline. She didn't die in the STO continuity, thus she wasn't "brought back" any more than in the Shatnerverse book Captain's Glory (set in 2381).

I guess every story between now and then will have that added "will this be it?" tension whenever something happens!

 

It's true that this was done as a backdoor in case the decision was made to bring her back later, but that's an entirely separate question from whether Janeway became a Q specifically. We've seen other forms of disembodied consciousness in the Trek universe. I for one was reminded of "Coda," in which the predatory entity that disguised itself as Janeway's father intended to preserve her consciousness in its domain and somehow feed upon it.

It was never stated at any point in Before Dishonor that Janeway would become a Q. Lady Q said that death was simply "becom[ing] something else," she spoke of "moving forward, evolving," and she offered to "show" Janeway what she meant. Nothing more specific was said, naturally, because that would be too limiting on future authors if they did decide to follow up on this. If you read that as "Janeway becomes a Q," that's your own interpretation, because it's not stated in the actual text. It could be interpreted in many different ways. It could mean that she had some different path before her and Lady Q was simply pointing her in the right direction. It could mean that the Q were adopting her as a pet -- which wouldn't make her a Q any more than Porthos was a Starfleet captain. It could mean that Lady Q was lying and giving Janeway a last moment of illusory comfort before her consciousness ceased to exist. It could mean whatever you want it to mean, or whatever some future author or editor might decide it means.
