I have wanted to start a couple threads about specific production design in Science Fiction films such as helmets, space/environmental suites, and interiors of ships but this blog post on the io9 site gives me the idea to continue the discussion on TrekBBS' SciFi/Fantasy forum. Which Science Fiction Movie Gives The Best Corridor? The production design of a corridor may be somewhat subtle but the original essay on the denofgeek site [on the original post] brings up a number of things like typefaces for writing and ID of corridors and locations, Aliens (1986) corridors of the atmosphere processing station and colony on LV-426 setting the blueprint for first-person-shooter videogames as well a the 2002 remake of Solaris being a very possible style in the near future. Also corridors from Red Planet (2000) & Moon (2009) really have a 2001:A Space Odyssey influence with the hexagon design motif. Lighting as usual plays an important role in how a corridor appears in the production design.
The original Alien's corridors were ultra-cool,. Begining of the film you got that long slow look at them. Reminded me of the time my school took me on a tour of a off-shore oil rig. TNG's halls were more like a hotels, for that reason the most realistic.
