Just a little update. I made new nacelles, added the impulse engines, and added just a splash of colour.

The nacelles took about 20 minutes- I'm not quite happy with these either...

Just a little bit of work on the ship today. The aft bridge section, some windows, and a docking ring.

Move your bridge behind a bit; right now the curvature of the hull doesn't match with the rounding of the bridge, which makes it feel weird. Other than that, very nice

Thanks. I did also want and try to move it back, but it keeps pulling other parts of the model when I slide it back. I've got the bridge bits selected, but I think it's intersected with the main hull... Does that make sense?

That being said, on the Mk II, there's no real reason why the bridge can't look the way it does. But on the next version, and for the sake of looks, I will be moving it back, like in the original drawing.

Thanks! It's what I'm aiming for. I didn't want it to look agressive. It's a tool, and a tool meant for peaceful endeavours, so in a way, it's design should reflect the intent (even if it doesn't have to). But that's based on the assumption that the resources in this time allow the design to be more then purely utilitarian like for example the old lunar lander. There's no aesthetic intent in it's design- just pure purpose.

Anyway- Here's a little update. I've added some windows, the fuel hump behind the impulse engines, and cleaned up some stuff inside and out.

The windows are a little tedious. Each level is 2.5 metres in height, and each window's centre-line is 1.25 metres from the deck.

Though the nacelles look the same here, I have just increased their height and width by a bit. I'll do a little more work on this version, and then move on to the next. Though I will only post the final version of the next one.

Re: Google SketchUp Federation Class

Parts in sketchup autojoin. For the bridge, select the parts, start to move them, then hit ctrl key. This will create a duplicate. You can then move it off to the side. Once there, make all the parts of the duplicate a group. Groups do not autojoin to other parts. You can then delete the original bridge and position the grouped version as you wish without further complications. I make a habit of grouping subassembles like the bridge, nacelles, primary hull as I build. It makes it easier to move them around without accidentally messing up other parts of the model. You can also convert things to components, sort of a more permanent version of grouping.

Does that means that, having gotten this far (and having learned quite a bit in the process) you're going to start over and put those newly-learned skills to use in, hopefully, making a model from the beginning which is more of a fit to what you're trying to accomplish?

That is indeed the plan, Stan! Er, I mean, Cary.
