Did Scotty ever actually say this? If so, when?

Or is it just another mutant Internet meme?

He did yeah. I can't recall which episode, or movie, it was though. I just remember hearing that.

    What does it mean, anyway?

I think it's just supposed to be a curse, like "Dammit!"

I've heard it's a meaningless phrase Doohan made up to use as a "Scottish" curse.

In "The Doomsday Machine", Spock is anxiously waiting to get Captain Kirk back aboard the Enterprise, but the Jefferies tube starts blowing sparks and Scotty hikes himself into it uttering some kind of expletive that sounds a lot like "Borgas frat"... if I remember correctly. ;)

He may have also said it in "I, Mudd", based on someone's post on the Internet.

I feel like it might've also been in one of the movies. TFF, maybe, while he's working on the transporter.

I thought he said bogus frat. What a frat is I don't know.

I'm pretty certain he says it in TFF. I believe it's in the "let's see what she's got, and then we found out, didn't we" bridge scene early in movie.

Yeah, in "The Doomsday machine," Scotty jury rigs the transporter but it goes out again and you can hear him mutter it as he heads back up the Jeffries tube again. In "I, Mudd," the androids force Scotty to beam down and when Scotty finds out that Harry Mudd's behind all their problems, he lets the insult hurl away at Mudd.

Yeah, it's just something Jimmy made up. Sounds rude, especially with a Scottish accent, yet flies right by the network censors.

Maybe it's some sort of Andorian insult...

The blu-ray subtitles for I, Mudd say "bogus rat". I always wondered what he said too. Funny things you learn while watching trek in bed while the wife is asleep.

A frat is a formal organization of male college students that generally exists for the purposes of having parties, getting drunk, subjecting new members to humiliating initiation rituals, and looking impressive on a resume.
And it's as authentically Scottish as Doohan's accent.

Ah, of course. I should have thought about it that way... Maybe 'borgas' is akin to 'rowdy' or 'outrageous'. Putting it all together, a mess of a deal often had with rowdy fraternities. ;)

He definitely says it in I, Mudd. When Mudd has his androids move the whole crew to the planent, including Scotty, he shakes hands with him, and Scotty grumbles, "Harry Mudd! Oh, ya borgas frat ya! You're the cause of all this, are ya?" I do remember the scene from The Doomsday Machine, but it's barely intelligible what he says as he curses.

    definition(urban dictionary):

A bogus frat boy is a fraternity member who is self-centered, a pot head, a gambler, a cheater, a liar, a coke head, a popped-collared mofo, an overcompensating testosterone-induced meat head, is shady and goes behind their other "brothers" backs to date their ex-girlfriends and cares about nothing but himself and his "brothers."
