Re: TOS episodes for kids? UPDATE

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice...

I already have TAS for my son when he is old enough.

I already have the following episodes in my TOS collection...
    "The Naked Time"
    "Balance of Terror"
    "Space Seed"
    “Errand of Mercy”
"The City on the Edge of Forever"
    “Amok Time”
    "Mirror, Mirror"
    "Journey to Babel"
    "The Trouble with Tribbles"
    "The Enterprise Incident"
    “The Tholian Web”
    “Day of the Dove”

In addition to the above episodes, I will get...
    Shore Leave
    I, Mudd

So I will need 2 more kid-friendly TOS episodes besides the episodes above. So far we've got...

TOS kid episode suggestions (with none against)...
    "The Corbomite Maneuver"
    "Squire of Gothos"
    "Arena"
    "Tomorrow is Yesterday"
    "Devil In The Dark"
    "A Piece of the Action"
    "Assignment Earth"
    "Spock's Brain"
"Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"
    "The Way to Eden"

Suggestions with some debate (some for, some against)...
    "The Enemy Within"
    "Miri"
    "Catspaw"
    "And the Children Shall Lead"

Do not get (none for, some against)...
    "Mudd's Women"

Any others? Or any other discussion of these?

Consider The Way to Eden. A young child might enjoy the music and the colorful costumes.

A couple of strange ideas: The Enemy Within and Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. Not the first things that jump to mind when considering TOS episodes for kids, but for some reason I can’t put my finger on, they feel right. Perhaps it’s the easy-to-follow plots and the lack of subtlety. It’s possible that the Kirk-Rand violence in TEW may be problematic, but that call has to be made by the child’s father, not some schmo on a BBS the father frequents.

Yes, the final call will be made by me and his mother regarding all material shown to my son, but I did post the question on the BB that I frequent to get suggestions from all the schmos here.

Thanks for yours. I have added them to my previous post.

"And the Children Shall Lead" is not recommendable for any sentient being and should not be allowed anywhere near an innocent child as the lack of quality could cause permanent damage!

    ;)

I would cast my vote for "The Devil in the Dark", "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "A Piece of the Action". All of them are great episodes as well as perfectly suited for children.

Of course. I was just pointing out one of the factors you might need to consider in deciding whether TEW is appropriate for your son.

Heh. I noticed you put TEW under “Suggestions with some debate (some for, some against)...” even though I’m the only one who mentioned it. I’m on both sides of the debate — guaranteed to win!

If I jumped every time somebody asked for advice around here I’d end up debating with myself.

It could come in handy when the child needs to be disciplined. Go all Ludovico on his ass. The nausea-inducing injection is not necessary, since the episode should take care of that by itself.

I don't know. Even as a kid, I never liked that episode.

And shouldn't we be exposing the poor child to some good episodes?

Ideally, yes we should. That's one that I don't remember that well. Isn't that the one with the space hippies?

    "Miri" will give kids NIGHTMARES!!!
So will the "melting" Gorgon in "And the Children Shall Lead"

I would STRONGLY recommend NOT showing them those.

Yep! Not exactly TOS's finest moment.

That having been said, since this isn't a TOS episode, I'll offer that since you obviously love your son a whole lot, I'd suggest adding DS9's "The Visitor" to your lineup... IMHO, not only is it the single finest piece of Star Trek ever written, but is an extremely powerful story of the bond between father and son. Gets me teary every time I watch it.
