Last I checked, Filloni's position on the "Rex or Nik" subject can be paraphrased as: "Whichever version you prefer is the right one. If someone else thinks different; then theirs' is the right one too!"
Which let's be honest is the most sensible approach, given that we're essentially talking about a nameless extra. Calling him a character is a bit of a stretch given he wasn't even assigned a name until two decades after the fact!

Was Rex at the Battle of Endor? Yup! Was that Rex, or Nik Sant on the Tydirium commando team? Also yup! Was that Wedge that sat next to Luke during the Yavin briefing, or Col Takbright? Yup! Not everything needs to be set in stone, and it's OK for the details of accounts from alternate sources to differ on certain points. Canon is all well and good, but it doesn't serve the story to be too granular about inconsequential details. See also: how Ahsoka went from hiding out on a farming world after Order 66, to becoming Fulcrum. Accounts differ, but the essential facts remain the same.

My personal head canon is that Nik Sant is an alias Rex goes by sometime. Why? I have no idea. I just like the idea that he's there, and that's the simplest explanation.

It's equally valid that Rex landed with the second wave reinforcements after the shield was taken down; alongside Zeb, Sabine & Kallus, with The Ghost and Phoenix Wing flying cover, and it was Nik with the Tydirium team the whole time. That's also a fun idea that I like!

For me, it just makes more sense to say it's Rex. Nik Sant was just another example of Star Wars feeling the need to give every single character in the background a name and a backstory.

He can still be Nik in Legends. In canon, he's Rex.

I prefer to characterise it as a "need to have something more than just 'Rebel Endor Trooper #5' on the backs of trading cards." since that seems to be where a good portion of these come from. Though in this case the reason seems to have been "flesh out an article on the Endor Strike team for a weekly fact file publication", it amounts to the same thing.

Latest episode of Katie Sackhoff's podcast in which she interviews Ming-Na Wen. They talk about Ming Na's entire life and career, but there is of course significant time spent on their mutual Star Wars experences

Particularly amusing are Ming-Na figuring out on set that the extra with the lightsaber and the gloved hand and the green astromech were really Luke and R2-D2, and not Plo Koon. She recalls turning to Dave Filoni and John Favreau and saying "are you kidding me?" Katie, who was there at the same time, was totally oblivious to the fact that this was not actually Plo Koon.

Katie apparently texted Filoni immediately after viewing the episode, pissed off that they didn't tell her the truth about the scene. Filoni asked her, "did you enjoy watching it?" After Katie said that she did, indeed, enjoy watching the reveal, Filoni replied "you're welcome".

Also, Ming finding out on set, along with most of the crew, that they were actually working on "The Book of Boba Fett" and not "The Mandalorian" season 3. Apparently, not even her agent and manager knew that she had signed on as the co-lead of her own spin-off series.

Yes you do. It's fantasy. That's how Star Wars works. Or Halo even. Star Trek just puts superfluous language on it with a science fiction twist but it does it too.

The trope of journeying in to the afterlife and returning changed is hardly new to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

And I was not aware Star Wars had angelic beings incarnated in mortal bodies.

Well, that certainly adds a new dimension onto the rumors that were circulating back around early 2021 that The Mandalorian S3 had begun filming, which turned out to be The Book of Boba Fett. It's possible nearly everyone in the studio actually thought they were doing Mando S3.
