I've never watched Seinfeld, so I don't get that reference.

It could be worse. They could have named her Soup.

    OMFG, finally.

Well, this is the first time I knew that medics could be called in on TAR. Has any team ever been pulled for a medical reason that wasn't covid?

I'm officially over the Yanu tribe; every single person on it sucks and I'm actively rooting for them to get Pagonged out of existence, either in the pre-merge or in rapid succession after the merge.

Not pulled, but I remember the father son team that won the all star season, in their first season they pulled themselves out of the race for an injury.

I don't have anything against the remaining Yanu members, they seem like they're perfectly decent players who got bad luck of the draw with tribe selection.

I find it amusing that they decided to have a non-vote elimination. I'm pretty sure that's the third time that ever happened (Not counting quits and medical pulls). Brandon Hantz got a no vote pull when he was flipping out like he was about to do something violent, and then Varner did when he outed a trans person. It's funny that they put Bhanu's elimination in that category when really the only thing he did wrong was be really, really bad at the game.

In an episode of Seinfeld that aired in 1996, George said he had the perfect name for a child which he was offering to friends who were about to have a baby. That name was 'Soda'. Also he said he reserved the perfect name for a child if he ever had one, 'Seven', then got angry because that couple decided to use Seven. She was born April 4, 1996. The episode aired February 1, 1996.

Bhanu was seriously starting to flip out.

Any early preferences for the TAR teams? I'm starting to like the twins, and it does illustrate the generation gap. They had no clue who Elizabeth Taylor was, so the clue meant absolutely nothing to them.

My favorite TAR teams thus far this season are the Cousins, the Firefighter Moms, and both LGBT teams.

I don't have any Amazing Race favorite so far, nor any I am rooting against. I like the mother/son team but they don't seem like a strong team. It's a weird casting this year, everyone is perfectly okay. Nobody is especially interesting, nobody is annoying. Just a bunch of okay teams.

Everyone who seems like they might win are just normal, likable people in functional relationships. Maybe the gay couple that came in second I like a little more than the others.

That was such a satisfying Survivor boot! All that conniving for nothing.

Gotta wonder what the twins were thinking. If they'd just stuck to cooking, they'd still be in the race. I have no idea who to root for now. I don't like any of the rest of the teams.

The pickings are mighty slim on both shows for who I'd want to win.

Survivor... I'd be happy with Hunter or Charlie.
TAR... The ones who have been coming in first the past couple of weeks? I'd be happy to see them win.

Right now my favorites to win are Tiffany, Maria, Tevin. I like Charlie but I don’t see him both getting a resume and not getting ousted for it. I also give decent shot to Kenzie and Hunter, and some shit to Ben and Venus. Only Venus cause she’s reached a point that she could get to the finals just by not seeming a threat then be able to say “I was a target from day one”.

Amazing Race is maybe one team away from having all the obvious weak teams out and getting to less predictable eliminations. Ricky & Cesar seem to obvious favorite but at least five teams that could easily win.

I have to ask, because there have been a couple of times when I've dozed off in front of the TV and missed a bit here and there... why do people hate Venus so much?

As for Kenzie... she could win, but I really don't like her. She has a "mean girl" vibe of saying cruel things and pretending to befriend someone, all the while planning to stab them in the back.

Maria would be a decent winner.

In TAR I think as you say, the weaker teams are being winnowed out. There will come a task that the older mom just won't be able to do, and that'll be it for them.

I don't think they hate Venus so much as they see her as someone always looking for the big resume move instead of working with the group.

Ohgosh. Okay, I guess I have something bizarre to look forward to (the show doesn't start for nearly another hour here).

Okay, I've seen it now. And yeah, that could have gone any number of ways. I can't say I'm particularly bothered by who got voted off, though it was a surprise. I was expecting somebody else.

The hide-and-seek was entertaining, though. And it wouldn't surprise me if production takes that idea and incorporates it into a challenge for some future season.

Though it must have been interesting for the camera operators to know exactly where everyone was, yet avoid giving all the locations away to the seekers.

I've been watching some episodes of old seasons. I started with season 4 just because way back when the only seasons I saw more than once were the first three. Then skipped season 5 because I remember it as being the worst season ever and went to 6.

It's amazing how much our memories of these seasons are embellished. Most of the players are so dumb by modern standards. They just go with whatever majority they find and never question it no matter how obviously they are on the bottom. But more than that. The way they treat the deaf woman, compared to the way Matt was treated last summer on Big Brother. The obnoxious misogyny of all the male cast members in the first male/female split season. Then all the spite votes at final tribal. With seasons like these I can't believe I kept watching.

I do kinda wish they'd bring back some of the survival elements, hunting and fishing and such. But players are so much better at the game now. And even the unlikable players are far less assholes.

There are about two or three seasons I never saw, and so many of them that I did see had people I must have forgotten 5 minutes after the finale.

That first season, though - it was, and still is, magic. Yes, in hindsight some of them were dumber than a sack of charcoal. But that's back when they thought survival skills mattered more than the ability to lie with a straight face and turn on the waterworks to manipulate people.

I recall when the rewards got ridiculous. They were like the sort of overnight holiday getaway that people would pay $$$ for - like helicopter rides to a resort where they'd have a gourmet feast and spa treatment - all in the same friggin' reward! Contrast that with one single slice of pizza that the winner was nice enough to SHARE with everyone so everyone got a bite of it.

I've been watching some videos on a couple of channels - one about Survivor and the other about Big Brother. And with maybe a couple of exceptions (ie. Colton and either Hantz), the worst Survivor player was nowhere near as awful as the worst BB player. To this day I cannot fathom why Evil Dick wasn't pulled out of that house and arrested on the spot for assault when he deliberately burned Jen with his cigarette.

I've also started watching older seasons recently (I started with Borneo - which I hadn't seen before - and am currently almost done with The Australian Outback - which I've also never seen), and I can honestly say that, IMO, the common wisdom that the show has changed dramatically and drastically since Season 1 doesn't really hold water, as, aside from some presentation quirks that didn't stick around, there's not actually a lot about the show as it is now that wasn't also present in Season 1.

Watching Borneo and now The Australian Outback has also made me realize that I kind of have a double standard when it comes to one specific player from much later on in the show's run where I can't separate who they are in the game from who they are in real life, and I'm not entirely sure where said double standard has come from.

    Russell Hantz

We'll see what happens once I actually get to (re)watching Samoa, Heroes vs Villains, and Redemption Island, but, as of now, I find myself frequently using Russell's real-life PoS behavior to justify my disdain for what I know/remember about his gameplay on Survivor, and I don't know why.
