    The subcutaneous transponder?
    1. Both Kirk and Spock use it for only that episode.
    2. They are very small, in fact, hard to find when Kirk digs it out of Spock's arm.
    3. The rubindium crystals in the transponders can create a laser beam.
    4. It's hidden under their skin in their arms.
    5. Maybe the crystals were disassembled from the transponder.
    6. I don't know where's Waldo in this episode.

Henoch You are correct! Further clues could have been, "one of the separate parts requires an external source to be of use"..... "Maybe this can shed some light on the subject",.... "Beauty is only skin deep" etc.

The Where's Waldo clue, meaning it was a tracking device to find someone in a crowd! Wonder why the transponder was not used in subsequent episodes? Makes tracking the away team easy for beaming if they loose the communicators or can't distinguished them from scanning.

p.s. Your episode was on MeTv last night....I guess you're up next!

1st Clue: We find a multitude of these objects on the Enterprise, more so in one episode.

    The portable mini viewscreens?

We see more of them in The Menagerie Part 1.

Mendez office, Spock quarters, the control centre, the court room, Pike's quarters (present day)

    Not any of the above.

2nd Clue: Kirk would call them archaic, but not everyone does in his crew.

What about those club thingys that magically appear in Engineering so Kirk can use them to whoop on Khan?

    A sword?

We see them in Naked Time, Squire of Gothos, Bread and Circuses, And the Children Shall Lead and most notably Day of the Dove.

@Methuselah Flint wins this easy one: the common sword. Day of the Dove is correct as for the sheer number of swords. Sulu would not call them "archaic".

    Thank you Sir!

    Clue # 1
I'm only shown in one episode, but one of my cousins' version is referenced in relation to something else, in another episode.

Maybe the mystery thingy is the Romulan Cloaking Device. (I want one for my car.) :)

    Afraid not Sirs!

    Clue # 2
Spock would consider my function illogical.

    M5 Multitronic Unit?
    1. All other computers are its cousins. I think it was the base for the Romulan Cloaking Device.
    2. It was based on Daystrom's Brain Patterns; and he was coo-coo.

    Good guess, but nope!

    Clue #3
I am shown planetside, but my cousin's indirect reference is shipboard.
