Not strictly DC-related but I can’t help but see the irony in David Ayer being hired to direct a Dirty Dozen remake https://deadline.com/2019/12/the-dirty-dozen-remake-david-ayer-warner-brosozen-remake-1202810595/
A supposed screen shot of a now deleted Instagram post where James Gunn said that he passed up a Superman movie in order to do The Suicide Squad on Reddit. If this is true, I think it was a good move on his part, I just don't really see his style fitting Superman.
Wasn't that a horror movie about an evil Superman like kid? That's not really a good example of a Superman movie. Dwayne Johnson has started his training for Black Adam, which is supposed to start filming this summer for a release next December.
Yes, that's their point. James Gunn produced Brightburn, so they're saying it's a good thing he didn't do Superman. On the other hand, just because he produced a movie that was a deconstruction of Superman doesn't mean he couldn't have done a straight Superman movie if he'd wanted. Not every filmmaker is as limited in range as Zack Snyder.
Oh, I thought they were saying they that Brightburn was a good example of why he should do a Superman movie.
He could have done a pretty good job on Superman--a Grant Morrison or perhaps Bendis approach--but Gunn made the right call I think. If he had made Superman, even if it were a success, there would have been the discontents and the controversy. Better to make a movie like Suicide Squad where the expectations are lower and there is a better chance that it will receive critical and popular acclaim.
Gunn was nearly run out of Hollywood a year or two ago so I can see that he might feel more of an affinity for a Suicide Squad over a Superman. This is a guy who started at Troma and has always had edgier works so though it might be interesting if he wanted to push himself that way I can see where this is more in his wheelhouse.
Yeah, I just think Suicide Squad is a better fit for his style. He probably could do a good Superman movie, but it would be a very different type of Superman movie, and I have a feeling after the Snyder movies they're probably going to want to go for a more traditional Superman movie next.
I'd kill for a light hearted, jokey Superman, especially after what Zach snyder made everyone suffer through for 2 and a half movies. I think Gunn could pull off a good superman film, its not like he's a one trick pony. If nothing else, he'd be an improvement over anyone who has done a Superman movie since the early 80s.
It's not being light and jokey, it's just that from what I've seen his movies tend to be darker, and a bit grungie, and that's not really what I expect from a Superman movie, but it is perfect for Suicide Squad.
I honestly liked the BvS more than Man of Steel, because Papa Kent bothered me. He really admonished Clark for saving a bus full of children?? And also died the most pointless death... Pa Kents teachings would have raised a supervillain, not Superman.
